What thumbnail sizes does YouTube actually provide?
Every video gets five auto-generated sizes: default (120×90), medium quality (320×180), high quality (480×360), standard (640×480), and — for most videos uploaded in HD — a max-res version at 1280×720.
Why is the max-res thumbnail sometimes missing?
YouTube only generates the 1280×720 version when the source video was uploaded above a certain resolution. Older or lower-resolution uploads skip straight to the 640×480 standard size, so a missing max-res image just means a smaller one is the best available.
Is it okay to download and reuse someone else's thumbnail?
The thumbnail image itself is still the uploader's work, the same as any other image on their channel. It's fine to use this tool to preview, reference, or download your own videos' thumbnails; reusing someone else's without permission works the same as reusing any other copyrighted image online.
How do I find the video ID in a URL?
It's the 11-character string after "v=" in a standard watch link, right after "youtu.be/" in a shortened link, or after "/shorts/" for a Shorts URL. This tool pulls it out automatically, so you can also just paste the whole link.
Will the thumbnail update if the uploader changes it later?
